Recruitment of Marrow Donors in the Non-governmental Sector of the Republic of North Macedonia, 2022

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow transplantation is a well-established lifesaving treatment procedure for many patients with various diseases, such as blood cell cancers (leukemia), some severe hematological diseases (aplastic anemia) and rare well immune deficiency disorders. Allogeneic hematopoietic stem (HSCT) represents potentially curative therapy hematologic disorders even the only (e.g., myelodysplastic syndromes). As an alternative donor strategy, in lacking human leukocyte antigen-matched or haploidentical donor, mismatched unrelated donors offer option of using HSCT this group patients. Since establishment first registry world recruitment bone donors, number newly formed registries has increased over years. In our country, addition to government-funded registry, housed at Institute Immunobiology Human Genetics, Faculty Medicine Skopje, additional non-governmental was established, Scientific Foundation SPIROSKI - Marrow Donor Registry (MK-SFSMDR).
